Position Summary

Under direct supervision, the GED Instructor and Educational Liaison is responsible for providing culturally specific and relevant educational instruction and support to Native American students. The Instructor shall design and provide an Adult Basic Education (ABE) program intended to prepare TANF adults to obtain the General Equivalency Diploma (GED), Test Assessing Secondary Education (TASC), and High School Equivalency Test (HiSET). The Liaison will support and train parents to navigate the educational process, to achieve their children’s educational success. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree plus two years adult basic education experience; or a combination of education and experience.

  • Valid teaching certificate required from an accredited school.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid California or Nevada driver’s license or capable of obtaining one within thirty-days (30) of employment.

  • Must be able to be insurable by the Tribe’s Driving Policy.

  • Reliable Transportation required.

  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen and background investigation.

  • Preference given to qualified Native American Indians.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Teaches Adult Basic Education, and/or a combination of GED Prep, TASC Prep, and HiSET Prep to TANF adults in a community based setting.

  • Creates an energetic and creative teaching style to address various learning needs.

  • Designs learning modules, lectures, provides small group and individual instruction.

  • Designs self-paced modules, based on a student’s level of learning

  • Maintains accurate attendance and academic records in the formulation of and/or a combination of GED, TASC, and HiSET attainment plans for individual students.

  • Maintains knowledge of a combination of GED, TASC, and HiSET testing site details (e.g. cost of exam, exam dates and locations), assists TANF adults with scheduling GED, TASC, and HiSET testing, and coordinates transportation resources with other staff to and from the exam.

  • Coordinates with Case Manager and Career Development staff to identify and respond to the needs of the TANF customers.

  • Assist TANF clients in higher education exploration, planning, enrollment, and funding options.

  • Attends conferences, Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings and disciplinary hearings to help explain the rights and responsibilities of the school and TANF parents.

  • Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Certifications
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, county, and local laws, regulations, and requirements.

  • Knowledge of records management procedures.

  • Knowledge of the principles, practices and methods of curriculum development.

  • Knowledge of business English, proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, and basic arithmetic.

  • Knowledge of literacy development practices and knowledge of the IEP process

  • Knowledge of the local Higher Education system(s)

  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships, work effectively, demonstrate leadership, and establish team building with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

  • Ability to work independently, meet strict time lines, make solid decisions and exercise independent judgment.

  • Ability to work extended hours and various work schedules.

  • Ability to prepare accurate, complete, and legible reports and create and present detailed, accurate, objective, and effective speeches and presentations.

  • Skill in operating business computers and office machines, including in a Windows environment, specifically Word, Excel, Access, and presentation software (such as PowerPoint).

  • Skill in analyzing problems, projecting consequences, identifying solutions, and implementing recommendations.

  • Skill in classroom management.

  • Skill in preparing reports and correspondence.

  • Skill in writing lesson plans and using curriculum guides.

Physical Demands
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit and stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk. The employee occasionally is required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
